Windows 11 can extract ordinary ZIP archives directly in File Explorer. You only need a separate archive utility when the file uses a format or feature Windows does not support.
Extract a ZIP file
- Open File Explorer and locate the ZIP file.
- Right-click the archive.
- Choose Extract All.
- Select the destination folder.
- Start the extraction.
- Open the destination and confirm that the expected files are present.
You can browse some compressed folders without extracting everything, but applications and installers often work more reliably after their files have been extracted to a normal folder.
Be cautious with downloaded archives
A ZIP file can contain executable programs, scripts, or other unsafe content. If the archive came from an unfamiliar source, do not assume compression makes it harmless. Keep Windows Security enabled and verify the source before opening executable files.
If Windows reports that the archive is invalid or extraction repeatedly fails, download the file again from the legitimate source before installing a random extraction utility. Password-protected, multi-part, or less common archive formats may require software that explicitly supports those features.
