You can still install Office 2007 on Windows 10 if you have the original installation disc or files and the 25-character product key. Run setup.exe as administrator, enter the key and select Install Now. Be aware that Microsoft stopped supporting Office 2007 on October 10, 2017, so it gets no security updates, Outlook 2007 can’t connect to most modern email accounts, and Microsoft no longer offers it for download.

Before you start
- You need your own installation media. Use the original disc, or setup files you copied from it. Don’t download Office 2007 from unofficial websites; those copies often contain malware.
- You need the product key. It’s on a sticker on the disc case or in the original purchase email.
- Check the license type. Retail copies can be moved to a new PC. Copies that came preinstalled on a computer (OEM) were licensed to that computer only.
- Windows 10 itself is out of support. Running two unsupported products together increases the risk. See how to enroll in Windows 10 Extended Security Updates.
Step 1: Run the installer
- Insert the disc. If your PC has no disc drive, use a USB DVD drive, or copy the disc’s files to a USB stick from another PC.
- Open the disc or folder in File Explorer, right-click setup.exe and select Run as administrator. Select Yes when asked.
- Enter your 25-character product key and select Continue.
- Accept the license terms.
- Select Install Now for a standard installation, or Customize to choose which apps to install and where.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then select Close.
Step 2: Activate Office
- Open Word 2007.
- When the activation wizard appears, choose to activate over the internet.
- If online activation fails, run the wizard again and choose telephone activation. Microsoft’s systems for products this old may no longer work, so activation isn’t guaranteed.
Step 3: Install the last updates
Office 2007’s final updates fix many security holes, even though no new ones are coming. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options, turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products, and select Check for updates. Install any Office 2007 updates offered, including Service Pack 3.
What works and what doesn’t
- Word, Excel and PowerPoint generally run, and they can open and save .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files. Newer features in documents, such as some charts and fonts, may not display correctly.
- Outlook 2007 can’t sign in to Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com accounts, which require newer sign-in methods. It may work with other providers using POP or IMAP.
- No security updates: documents with malicious content are riskier to open. Keep Microsoft Defender on and be careful with attachments.

Troubleshooting
“The installation of this package failed”
Run setup as administrator, and temporarily turn off third-party antivirus. If a newer Office is installed, the installer may refuse or ask to remove it; install Office 2007 alongside it by choosing Customize and keeping the existing version.
The product key isn’t accepted
Check for easily confused characters such as B and 8. Keys for Office 2007 trial versions, or for other Office versions, won’t work.
Office 2007 apps crash or won’t open
