To install Firefox on Windows 11, open Microsoft Edge, go to firefox.com, and select Download Firefox. When the download finishes, select Open file in Edge’s Downloads panel, and select Yes if Windows asks for permission. Firefox installs and opens on its own. You can also get Firefox from the Microsoft Store: search for Firefox and select Get. Both are free and come from Mozilla.

Which way should you install Firefox?
- Mozilla’s installer is the standard version. Firefox updates itself, and you get Mozilla’s full set of installation options.
- The Microsoft Store version installs in a few clicks and is updated by the Store along with your other apps.
Mozilla notes that the two versions keep separate Firefox profiles, so pick one rather than installing both. If you’re not sure, use Mozilla’s installer.
Install Firefox with Mozilla’s installer
- Open Microsoft Edge (or any browser you already have).
- Go to firefox.com and select Download Firefox. The download page picks the right version for your PC.
- In the Downloads panel at the top right of Edge, select Open file under the Firefox installer.
- If User Account Control asks whether to let the installer make changes, select Yes. Firefox is then installed for everyone on the PC.
- Wait for the installer to finish. Firefox opens with a welcome page.
- Select Continue, and then follow or skip the setup steps.
If you select No at the permission prompt, or you don’t have permission to approve it, Mozilla says Firefox installs for your own account only, so other people on the PC won’t see it.

Install Firefox from the Microsoft Store
- Select Start, type Microsoft Store, and open it.
- Search for Firefox and press Enter.
- Select Mozilla Firefox, and make sure the publisher is Mozilla.
- Select Get. When it finishes, select Open.
The Store keeps this version up to date. To check for updates yourself, open Microsoft Store > Downloads and select Get updates.
Make Firefox your default browser
Installing Firefox doesn’t make it your default browser. Firefox may ask when you first open it. If it doesn’t, or you installed it from the Store, set it in Windows:
- Select Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for Firefox and select it.
- Select Set default at the top.

Pin Firefox and keep it updated
- Pin it: select Start > All, right-click Firefox, and select Pin to taskbar or Pin to Start.
- Check for updates: in Firefox, open the menu (≡) and select Help > About Firefox. Firefox checks for an update and installs it. The Store version updates through the Store instead.
If Firefox won’t install
- Windows says you can only install apps from the Microsoft Store. Your PC may be in S mode, which runs only Store apps. Mozilla notes that Firefox can’t be installed in S mode, even from the Store. Leaving S mode is a one-way change, so decide carefully before you switch.
- The download is flagged as harmful. Download Firefox only from firefox.com or the Microsoft Store, never from other download sites.
- The installer doesn’t start. Check your Downloads folder and open the installer from there.
- Work or school PC. Your organization may control which apps you can install. Ask your IT administrator.
Uninstall Firefox
Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select More options (…) next to Mozilla Firefox, and select Uninstall. See how to uninstall a program in Windows 11.

Is Firefox free?
Yes. Firefox is free from Mozilla and from the Microsoft Store.
Can I keep Microsoft Edge?
Yes. Edge is part of Windows 11 and stays installed. You can use both browsers and choose which one opens links.
Can I bring my bookmarks from Edge or Chrome?
Yes. Firefox can import bookmarks and history from another browser. It may offer this when you first open it.
Does this work on Windows 10?
