How Do You Share a File in Google Docs?

December 17, 2019 By Matt Jacobs

The steps in this article are going to show you how to share a Google Docs file with another Google Docs user via their email address.

  1. Sign into Google Drive and open the file you wish to share.
  2. Click the Share button at the top-right of the window.
  3. Give the file a name if prompted.
  4. Enter the email address of the person with whom you want to share the file.
  5. Click the pencil icon and choose their permissions, then click the Done button.

One of the best parts about working in Google Docs is the ease with which you can share a file with another Google user. This lets them see your current work in progress and make comments on it or, depending on the permissions you set, even make changes to it.

Our guide below is going to show you how to share a Google Docs file with another Google user via their email address. That user can then click the link that is sent to them and open the file in Google Docs.
